Canfield council invited to Salem Christmas event

CANFIELD — City council had a special guest at its Wednesday meeting, as Alicia Johnston, a Canfield resident and executive director of the Salem Chamber of Commerce, spoke about upcoming events in Salem and invited council to attend the city’s annual Christmas parade Dec. 4.

“Salem is an America 250 city and will be hosting a huge event on July 3, 2026,” she said. “Our Christmas parade is going to be a huge event too and I would like to invite Canfield Council to come out and see the event.”

Canfield will be hosting its own Christmas event with the annual Lighting of the Green on Nov. 22. That event will be in cooperation with Canfield Township, where Santa will be set up for children to come and visit.

In other business, Councilman Bruce Neff spoke on the formation of a Canfield High School alumni association. He said interested individuals have been meeting the first Monday of each month and the average number has been around a dozen. He said despite the low turnout, many people want to see an association formed.

“Right now we are on hold until after Thanksgiving,” Neff said. “But we are still looking to move forward on forming one.”

Police Chief Chuck Colucci reported on the end of a long cold case.

“We are happy to report the ending of a 2000 rape case with the arrest of Jack Sheetz,” Colucci said. “He was arraigned on Tuesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. It is great to give the victim and our officers some justice and closure.”

He said Canfield detectives have worked hard on the case over the past eight years, never giving up.

“Justice should prevail,” Colucci said.
