Weathersfield OKs annexation agreement with company

WEATHERSFIELD — Township trustees on Thursday approved a resolution for an annexation agreement among the township, the city of Niles and Gearmar Properties Inc.

Gearmar Properties owns 122.632 acres of land in Weathersfield and desired to annex the land into Niles.

Township Administrator David Rouan said an annexation agreement was reached to foster economic development that will benefit both the township and the city.

He said the property, which is located on North Main Street, west of Route 169 near BRT Steel, will be annexed into Niles but remain in the township, which will receive the property tax, while the city will receive the income tax from whatever Gearmar builds on the land.

The county also receives some taxes on the property.

Rouan said he is not sure what the company plans to construct on the property.

The county commissioners will review the petition for annexation at the county administration building at noon Wednesday. There, the commissioners will decide whether the petition should be approved or denied.

Gearmar Properties filed an annexation petition last summer with the county commissioners.

The former Brainard Strapping plant on Larchmont Avenue in Warren, which was once a division of the former Sharon Steel Corp., was previously owned by Gearmar Properties Inc., an Ohio corporation, which had purchased the property from Brainard Corp. in January 2005.

Starting at $3.23/week.
