Staff report
The Ohio Controlling Board approved the release Monday of $4.25 million to replace six elevators at the Ohio State Penitentiary’s supermax prison in Youngstown.
Funds have been earmarked for the 2026 fiscal year.
The Murphy Contracting Co., 285 Andrews Ave., Youngstown, will oversee the construction phase of the Switchgear Elevator Replacement Project.
The company will receive approximately $3.35 million, according to the controlling board.
Its bid was the lowest of three received.
In August, the controlling board awarded approximately $11 million for upgrades to the prison’s heating and ventilation systems. The project is being administered by the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission.
Located at 884 Coitsville-Hubbard Road, the 240-acre site can hold up to approximately 500 inmates. It opened in 1998.
