Man who hit student with car sentenced

YOUNGSTOWN — Herman Posey III, 47, of Gladstone Street was sentenced to three years in prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to felony vehicular assault for striking a 16-year-old East High School student with his car on Bennington Avenue on the East Side last Sept. 20.

Posey pleaded guilty in June to vehicular assault, a third-degree felony, and failure to stop after an accident, a fourth-degree felony. Prosecutors were recommending that Posey get two years in prison.

But Judge Anthony Donofrio of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court sentenced Posey one year higher.

The student was walking on the road near the curb, police said. The boy sustained serious injuries and was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. He was in stable condition later.

Police used school safety-zone traffic cameras and surveillance cameras to identify the vehicle and then arrest the driver.

Starting at $3.23/week.
