Teamsters’ strike against Republic spreads to Valley
Striking Teamsters at Republic Services have expanded their strike against the waste management company to the Mahoning Valley.
Picket lines have been extended to Republic Services Carbon Limestone Landfill on State Line Road in Lowellville as of Tuesday.
According to the union in a news release Tuesday, the strike will now impact 2 million people.
In the Mahoning Valley, trucks and trains carrying 12 million pounds of trash per day from New York City and New Jersey will be unable to unload at Carbon Limestone, one of the nation’s largest landfills.
Over 2,000 Republic Teamsters are either on strike or honoring picket lines, union leaders said, adding Republic’s strike has resulted in major disruptions to waste collections for millions of Americans nationwide.
The company reportedly has hired replacement drivers to fill in for the strikers.
Republic is the second largest provider of waste disposal in the United States (as measured by revenue) after Waste Management. Its operations primarily consist of providing collection, transfer, and disposal of non-hazardous solid waste, recovering and recycling of certain materials, and energy services.
