Struthers man gets revised indictment in fatal crash

YOUNGSTOWN — A Mahoning County grand jury has handed up a superseding indictment in the case of Walter Bolt, 65, of Struthers in a March 3 crash in Springfield Township that killed a New Middletown woman and her son and left another son severely injured.

Bolt was indicted last month on two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, one count of aggravated vehicular assault and one count of drunken driving.

On Thursday, the grand jury indicted Bolt on the same two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and single count of aggravated vehicular assault. But instead of one count of misdemeanor drunken driving, he is now indicted on three counts.

Killed in the crash were Angela Brown, 44, of New Middletown, and her 15-year-old son, Jason Daff, who was a passenger. Brown’s 12-year-old son, Jayden Daff, survived the 7:30 p.m. crash but suffered serious injuries.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol, which investigated the crash, stated in a news release that Bolt sustained serious injuries. Brown died at the scene, but both of her sons were taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. Bolt also was taken to St. Elizabeth’s.

The release states that Bolt’s Chevrolet Colorado was heading south on state Route 170 and Brown’s Honda Accord was going north when Bolt struck Brown’s car and overturned it, causing her Honda to come to rest in the ditch on the east side of the road. The Colorado came to a stop partially off the road.

Angela “Angie” Brown graduated from Struthers High School / Mahoning County Joint Vocational School in 1998, according to her obituary. Jason Daff was a sophomore at Springfield Local High School.

A test done on Bolt indicated he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.215, according to an Ohio State Highway Patrol crash report. That is more than twice the legal limit to drive in Ohio of 0.08.

Bolt remains in the Mahoning County jail in lieu of $250,000 bond.

Starting at $3.23/week.
