Austintown woman indicted in bus-crash related drug offenses

YOUNGSTOWN — A 21-year-old Austintown woman was indicted on charges of felony drug possession and OVI Thursday in an April 16 incident in Struthers that began with a traffic accident on Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown involving a Western Reserve Transit Authority bus.

Mia K. Subramanian, 21, Aldridge Road, Austintown, was indicted on charges of cocaine possession, fentanyl-related compound possession and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, a drug of abuse or a combination of them — OVI.

She also was charged in Youngstown Municipal Court with failure to stop after an accident, a first-degree misdemeanor, that allegedly occurred at Mahoning and South Schenley avenues in Youngstown. That case is still pending in Youngstown Municipal Court.

A criminal complaint filed in Struthers Municipal Court states that on April 16, the safety security director for WRTA called the Struthers Police Department to notify officers that he was following a white Volvo on Poland Avenue near Sexton Street that the employee believed was impaired.

The safety-security officer remained on the phone until an officer with the Struthers Police Department made contact with Subramanian and made a traffic stop after “independently” observing Subramanian swerve into the opposite lane of travel on Fifth Street in Struthers, the criminal complaint states.

Another officer arrived, and he found a pill bottle with sandwich baggies inside in an open purse on the passenger seat of Subramanian’s car. Field sobriety tests were given, and the bottle was checked and found to contain various pills and a powdery substance, the criminal complaint states.

The safety security director told Struthers police he was dispatched to an accident involving a WRTA bus and a white Volvo on Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown when he located the Volvo and started to follow it before calling police.

Subramanian’s drug and OVI charges were filed in Struthers Municipal Court and later bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury.
