Liberty OKs contracts ahead of next school year
LIBERTY — The Liberty Board of Education passed a series of contract-related resolutions at its meeting Monday.
The board approved granting Jason Yemma, Liberty PK-6 Elementary School’s grades 3 through 6 principal, a three-year administrative contract effective Aug. 1, 2025, through July 31, 2028. The contract will pay $97,615 yearly.
The board also secured Elementary P-2 principal Michael Palmer’s replacement by granting Ryan Stowell a two-year administrative contract effective Aug. 1, 2025, through July 31, 2027. The contract will pay $95,535 yearly.
Palmer’s resignation for retirement purposes — after 33 years with the district — was approved by the board at its April meeting.
The board secured the district’s replacement for departing Band Director Michael Summers, who spent 26 years with the district, approving Gabriella Sandy for a one-year $58,151 limited contract effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. Sandy, who joined the district in 2023, previously taught kindergarten through fourth grade and assisted with fifth- and sixth-grade band.
The board also accepted the resignation of Todd Smith, who was a teacher on assignment and approved granting him a three-year limited contract as the district’s K-12 athletic director and grades 7 and 8 dean of students, which will pay $91,848 yearly.
Board President David Malone congratulated Stowell, Sandy and Smith, who were in the audience for the meeting, on their new contracts.
In other action, the board:
• Approved granting school psychologist Brittany Gebhart a one-year limited contract effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026.
• Approved granting Karen Zagorec a one-year, $77,011 limited contract effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026, replacing elementary math teacher Payton Porter.
• Approved granting one-year limited contracts to 35 other licensed teaching personnel, effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026.
• Accepted Krista Gettan’s resignation as secretary, effective May 3.
• Approved granting a two-year limited contract to eight intervention assistants effective Aug. 1, 2025, through July 31, 2027.
• Approved granting one-year limited contracts to two intervention assistants, a secretary and a lunchroom and recess aide, effective Aug. 1, 2025, through July 31, 2026.
• Approved an agreement with Debra Mettee to be employed as a professional consultant for the board of education, superintendent and treasurer for the 2025-26 school year.
• Approved an agreement between the district and Niles-based AARIS Therapy Group to provide behavioral intervention and consultative services for students. The contract is for one year, effective Aug. 1, 2025, through June 31, 2026, for $80 per hour with a maximum budget not to exceed $86,500 unless otherwise agreed on by both parties. AARIS will invoice the district monthly.
• Approved a three-year agreement between the district and Health-e Pro to provide a menu planning package and quickstart services for the district’s food service and nutrition department, for a first-year total of $7,625 and annual $3,450 payments.
• Declared 62 books, 12 teacher manuals, 14 teacher workbooks, two box picture sequence cards and three audio CDs for the Reading Street program obsolete and authorized Superintendent Brian Knight to determine future use.
• Approved offering a blended learning instruction model as part of the K-12 instruction plan for the 2025-26 school year, through the use of time in classes and online and non-computer-based learning opportunities.
