Museum hop set April 12 in Canfield

All-day event to focus on 5 historic institutions

CANFIELD — Canfield’s museums will join together to host the first Canfield Museum Hop on April 12.

The program will feature all of Canfield’s historic museums in a one-day event that features each, along with a chance to win a gift basket.

The event will take place 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and invites participants to visit five unique sites that will be open and offering a special activity or display for the museum hop.

“Taking part are the Mahoning Dispatch Newspaper Office, the Bond House, Loghurst Farm Museum, the War Vet Museum and TP Tools and Equipment’s Antique Car Museum,” said event organizer Laura Zeh.

To participate, attendees can pre-purchase a Museum Hop Passport for $10, which helps to support the nonprofit participating sites and grants entry to all five locations. The Bond House at 44 W. Main St. and the Mahoning Dispatch Museum at 23 S. Broad St. are both operated by the Canfield Historical Society. Both contain a vast history of the Canfield area and contain a plethora of related artifacts.

The TP Tools Auto Museum at 7075 state Route 446 features several buildings full of historic and rare automobiles. Among the collection is a 1940 Cadillac Series 75 convertible that served the Secret Service under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt during World War II and stayed in service until 1963 after being driven in John F. Kennedy’s funeral cortege.

Also at TP Tools Auto Museum is the chocolate “Malt Bar” original back bar from Strouss’ Department Store in downtown Youngstown. It has been carefully preserved and set into a diorama display.

The War Veterans Museum, 23 E. Main St., features artifacts from all wars in which Americans fought. Among the artifacts are the sword from Revolutionary War General Mad Anthony Wayne, a piece of decking from the USS Arizona sunk at Pearl Harbor, and two operating train displays in O and HO scales.

“We are glad to be a part of this,” said War Veterans Museum President Doug Speece. “We will have the trains in operation for the event.”

The final stop on the hop will be Loghurst Farm Museum, 3967 Boardman Canfield Road in Canfield Township. The vintage farmhouse was part of the underground railroad during the Civil War and has many historic artifacts on display.

All five locations will have a person stamping a passport for each visitor. Once all five locations have been punched, the passport is entered into a drawing for a gift basket valued at $150.

Passports will be available for pre-sale at The Bond House (44 W. Main Street, Canfield), 3:30 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays, beginning March 24 through April 11.

Proceeds from the event will be divided between the five participating museums.

“Don’t miss this fun family opportunity to explore some of Canfield’s fascinating attractions, while enjoying unique activities at every stop,” Zeh said. “Join the adventure and hop through Canfield with us.”
