Girard man accused of causing deadly crash

Wreck kills boy, 12

YOUNGSTOWN — Brandon T. Kennedy, 31, of Broadview Avenue, Girard, has been indicted in the Nov. 17, 2023, crash at Alameda and Juanita avenues on Youngstown’s North Side that killed a 12-year-old passenger in Kennedy’s car.

Kennedy was indicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter, aggravated vehicular homicide, two counts of felony vehicular assault, two counts of felony child endangering and one misdemeanor count of driving under suspension or in violation of license restriction.

The involuntary manslaughter could result in a prison sentence of about 11 years if convicted. The aggravated vehicular homicide is a lesser offense, but the penalty for that offense could be about eight years in prison if convicted. The other charges carry lesser potential sentences.

The Youngstown Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for Kennedy Sept. 9, and officers with the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested Kennedy at a home in the first block of Broadview Avenue in Girard the next day, according to a Marshals Service news release.

The 9:21 a.m. Nov. 17 crash killed Ja’Vonie M. LaBooth, 12, of Alameda Avenue, and injured three other people, according to Vindicator files.

Kennedy drove a 2023 Dodge Charger at high speed and failed to stop at a stop sign, according to a Youngstown Police Department crash report. Kennedy’s vehicle struck another vehicle. When officers arrived, they found Kennedy’s car crashed into a tree. Kennedy suffered suspected serious injuries in the crash. The driver of the other vehicle, Eric M.
