City police ID Pelini as victim of assault
Parent of player accused of punching Mooney head coach
YOUNGSTOWN — A Youngstown police report and news release Tuesday state that head football coach Carl Pelini of Cardinal Mooney High School was the coach assaulted in the coach’s office Friday by the parent of a Mooney player.
The Vindicator obtained a preliminary copy of the police report Monday and reported on it, but did not report Pelini’s name as the victim of the alleged assault because the names of victims of crime are usually redacted from Youngstown police reports under Ohio’s Marsy’s Law.
But Capt. Jason Simon, head of detectives for the Youngstown Police Department, issued a news release Tuesday about the alleged assault, naming Pelini as the reported victim. Simon stated that the “validated police report has been prepared and released by the YPD Record Room so that the public can be accurately informed.”
As of Tuesday afternoon, the suspect in the alleged assault did not have any new charges on file in Youngstown Municipal Court’s online records.
The news release stated that “As this is an ongoing investigation of a criminal incident, nothing further can be released at this time.”
The report released Tuesday appeared to be the same or substantially the same as the one obtained Monday by The Vindicator.
The report released Tuesday states that Pelini was seated in a chair in the coach’s office at the school about 10:30 p.m. Friday when the father of one of the team’s players “barged through the office door” and asked which coach had been giving his son a “hard time” that evening.
When Pelini said “he had been the one to give him a hard time,” the player’s father “sucker punched” Pelini in the face. Pelini said he “somehow fell” into a desk and thought he may have broken ribs. Pelini said he would get his own ride to the hospital to get his ribs checked out.
The report states that Pelini said the man’s son had gotten into a fight during the game Friday night at Warren G. Harding High School and that Pelini and the player “had some words” over it. Pelini said this was not the first time “this had occurred” with that player.
The report states that Pelini had “noticeable bruising beginning to form on his face near his left cheekbone, as well as some blood on his chin.”
The report states the same details as reported earlier about Pelini’s assistant coaches giving police a similar account of the alleged assault: that the boy’s father “barged into the office and struck Carl, before throwing him into a desk, which is how they believe he injured his ribs.
“They stated that (the player’s father) was on top of him, continuing to strike him. They advised they intervened at that point and that (the player’s father) left. They did make a point to mention that (the player) was present with (his father) when this occurred and that he was physically involved,” the report states.
The report stated that Pelini was advised to “follow up on Monday morning in order to pursue charges,” but it is not known whether he did so.
