Austintown standoff ends in woman’s death

AUSTINTOWN — Details of a woman’s death are being kept private after a 3.5-hour standoff went awry Friday afternoon.

Police from several agencies responded to 5359 Pinecrest Ave. after a woman barricaded herself inside around 9 a.m. Four gunshots were fired around 12:20 p.m, according to a neighbor.

A toddler and a man who contacted authorities were also inside but were escorted out safely by officers. A negotiator from the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team was called, and a drone was deployed after officers broke a window.

Police tried to negotiate with the woman to come to the door to assess the situation, but they were unsuccessful. She had two weapons and fired shots throughout negotiation attempts.

Her cause of death was not disclosed out of respect to her family, who is still trying to process the situation, Austintown police Capt. Thomas Collins said.
