Man faces more than a dozen charges after police chase
CAMPBELL — A local man is out on bail after spending the weekend in lockup for leading police on a brief chase through town.
Lynn Murphy Bowden, 45, of Reed Avenue, faces multiple charges, including four felonies.
On Saturday, he appeared in Campbell Municipal Court for a probable cause hearing, where a total of $16,000 cash or surety bond was imposed. Court records show he posted that bond Sunday.
Court officials said Bowden pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanors Tuesday and the case has been continued until 9 a.m. Oct. 1.
The Campbell Police report states an officer tried to pull over Bowden Friday, when he allegedly made an illegal turn through a red light, from Coitsville Road onto 12th Street, failing to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic.
As soon as the officer engaged his lights and siren, Bowden ran the red light at 12th Street and McCartney Road, then turned left onto Fincastle Lane.
The report states Bowden allegedly accelerated through several intersections in a residential area, turning right from Fincastle onto Chatham, left onto Lil-Burn, left onto Rutledge, left back onto Lil-Burn, right onto Chatham and right again onto Mumford.
The report states Bowden then jumped out of the car, said “bye” to police and ran into an open field across the street.
As police chased him, they warned Bowden that he would be bitten by the police dog, Ranger, if he did not stop running.
Bowden allegedly ignored the warnings and continued running. Police said they could see him handling a black fanny pack that was slung around his shoulder.
After warning him again, they released Ranger from the cruiser. Bowden was taken down by the dog moments after trying to throw the fanny pack away into the field.
The report states that inside the pack, police found a loaded .40-caliber Glock handgun, multiple plastic baggies, a digital scale and several bags of marijuana totaling more than 100 grams.
Inside Bowden’s car, police allegedly found a magazine containing 22 .40-caliber rounds and an open vodka bottle.
During his interview at the station, police said they noticed a heavy odor of alcohol coming from Bowden and his eyes appeared bloodshot and glassy. He refused a breath test and was subsequently charged with OVI.
In total, Bowden faces felony charges for failure to comply, improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and trafficking in marijuana.
He also is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, having a weapon while intoxicated, resisting arrest, obstructing official business, possession of drug paraphernalia, open alcohol container, driving under suspension, running a red light and reckless operation, all misdemeanors.
