15 seek seat on Boardman school board
BOARDMAN — After a member of the Boardman Board of Education resigned earlier this month, 15 resumes were accepted to fill the vacated position.
Board members narrowed the pool to 10 people, whom they interviewed Wednesday.
Frank Zetts resigned from the board effective Aug. 6 citing personal reasons, according to his handwritten resignation letter.
The news came after he was arrested on a charge of OVI, driving without a license and driving in marked lanes in March. As part of a plea deal, Zetts received a suspended jail sentence, a 12-month license suspension with limited driving privileges and was ordered to attend a Driver Intervention Program.
Twenty people expressed interest in the position, according to board president John Fryda, and 15 submitted their resumes to be considered.
“We are pleased with the great response we’ve received, with nearly 20 applicants for the open school board seat,” Fryda said. “We are excited to welcome a new board member who will be focused on what’s best for our students, staff and families while keeping an eye on our fiscal responsibilities to our Boardman community.”
Zetts’ successor will serve out the remainder of his term, which runs until Dec. 31, 2025. After the term expires, the new member will need to run for reelection if he or she chooses to continue serving on the board.
The position must be filled within 30 days of vacancy, according to the Ohio Revised Code. Board of Education members must reside in Boardman to be eligible to serve.
Candidates will be reviewed at the next regular Board of Education meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Boardman High School.
The 10 candidates interviewed include:
* Cristina Beggs, a third-grade teacher and Title I Coordinator at West Boulevard Elementary School.
* Tom Davis, former principal of Carrollton High School, Springfield Local High School and Bell-Herron Middle School.
* Jenna Fox, assistant director of enrollment management at Kent State University at Trumbull and an adjunct instructor there.
* Jason Loree, Boardman Township administrator.
* Yasmine Makridis, a prosecuting attorney with the Northern District of Ohio U.S. Attorney’s Office.
* Debra Mettee, a doctoral candidate in educational leadership at Youngstown State University. She served as superintendent for the Liberty Local School District until Aug. 1 and prior to that served as superintendent in the Springfield Local School District.
* R. Scott Murray, an owner of the Murray Insurance Agency and a Boardman firefighter.
* Anthony Valentini, national director of sales for City Printing Inc.
* Tom Varley, director of human resources at Compco.
* Thomas Wakefield, chair of the department of math and statistics at Youngstown State University.
