Rep renews drive to name park after Trump
State Rep. Michael Loychik said he will soon reintroduce a bill to rename Mosquito Lake State Park after former President Donald Trump and expects it to pass this time.
“President Trump has worked tirelessly not just for the people of Trumbull and Ashtabula counties in District 65, but for all Ohioans and all Americans, both during and after his presidency,” said Loychik, R-Bazetta.
Loychik added, “In light of the recent events that transpired in Butler, Pa., I believe this further personifies the type of leader we have in President Trump — brave, fearless and puts America first, which is why I hope that we can rename our wonderful state park in his honor.”
Loychik is referring to the July 13 assassination attempt on Trump, who is the Republican presidential nominee on the Nov. 5 ballot. It’s the third consecutive presidential election in which Trump is the Republican presidential nominee.
Loychik said co-sponsorship on his bill to rename the Trumbull County park the Donald J. Trump State Park is open until next Friday. After the bill’s formal introduction, it will be assigned to a committee.
The Ohio House isn’t scheduled to meet again until after the Nov. 5 election. The bill has to pass by the end of the year or be reintroduced again as soon as the next legislative session, which starts in January 2025.
Loychik, whose term in the state House ends Dec. 31, said he expects the bill to move quickly through lame-duck session. The next legislative session is after the election between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, who is expected to be the Democratic nominee.
“It’s going to move fast in honor of our future president and pass in both chambers,” Loychik said Friday.
President Joe Biden withdrew Sunday from seeking reelection under pressure from Democratic Party officials after his disastrous performance at the June 27 debate against Trump.
Loychik, who is serving his second two-year term in the House, unsuccessfully ran in the Republican primary on March 19 for the 32nd Ohio Senate District seat against incumbent Sandra O’Brien, R-Lenox. O’Brien received 63.8% of the vote to 36.2% for Loychik.
Donald Trump Jr., the presidential nominee’s oldest son and a close advisor, headlined an Aug. 22, 2022, rally for Loychik at the Eastwood Event Centre in Niles. That was held a few months before Loychik was elected to his second state House term.
Loychik introduced a similar bill to rename the park after Trump on April 19, 2021, with six Republican co-sponsors. The bill was assigned to the House Finance Committee and never received a hearing.
