Canfield board OKs bond levy for fall ballot

CANFIELD — School board members here have agreed to place a $64.1 million bond levy before voters in November.

While the cost to the owner of a $100,000 home and length of the levy was not yet known, Treasurer Pattie Prince said it would equal 3.7 mills.

Board members when they met Wednesday reported there was not much negative feedback in the community.

“I’m hearing a lot of good feedback,” Betsy Ahlquist said. “There is not a lot of pushback.”

Meanwhile, other projects are progressing in the district. Earlier this year, the board agreed to spend about $3 million on improvements.

“We have come in well under our estimates,” Superintendent Joe Knoll said.

He said the secure vestibules at the elementary schools are set to get underway. Also, work on the $72,877 vestibule at C.H. Campbell is set to begin Monday. In addition, work on a $59,700 vestibule project at Hilltop is set to start July 22.

“We hope to have both completed by the start of school,” Knoll said.

The other big project was the C.H. Campbell heating, ventilation and air conditioning upgrade. Knoll said 33 room units are in place and are being hooked up this week. That project came in at $275,908.

Also, more than $500,000 of roof repairs at the high school, a $435,971 pavement project and $38,260 in stormwater drain work are scheduled to begin this month. They should take about a week to complete.

In addition, work to improve the tennis court has begun, and projects at the baseball / softball field are expected to begin soon.

In other business, the treasurer Prince highlighted a $10,000 donation from the Cafaro Foundation to the district’s athletic department in honor of the 2024 Division II state championship softball team.

The Cardinals won the title in May with a 4-0 victory over the Bryan Golden Bears. The team finished the season with a 27-3 record.
