Youngstown police investigating shooting death on Connecticut Avenue on West Side

YOUNGSTOWN — A man, 33, was found Wednesday with multiple gunshot wounds in a vehicle on the West Side and was pronounced dead later at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

The Youngstown Police Department issued a news release Wednesday morning calling the death a homicide. Police were alerted to a possible gunshot victim at 4:44 a.m.

Police were sent to multiple locations, but located the man in the area of Connecticut and North Dunlap avenues, the release states.

The victim was taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth downtown. The investigation into the homicide is “in the very early stages of gathering information,” the release stated. The release did not provide other details because “we do not have any additional information that can or will be released,” it states. No arrest has been made.

If the killing is officially ruled a homicide, it will be the eighth of the year in the city.

The seventh homicide was the May 4 killing of Tyrell Hodge, 26. He was found in the grass at an apartment complex on Hickory Court on Youngstown’s East Side after police were called there for a man who had been stabbed. Officers said the man had been stabbed multiple times.

He was pronounced dead later at St. Elizabeth. A Youngstown police report stated the man was found near the playground between two apartment buildings.

A person at the complex told police the power had gone out, and he or she came outside to see if anyone else’s power had gone off. That is when the person saw the man on the ground and gave assistance to him until officers arrived.

Another person told police he or she was standing in the area when he or she “saw several people fighting. And then the next thing he knew, a male was on the ground,” the report states.

The homicide before that was the Feb. 29 killing of DeeAnna Summers, 29. She was assaulted on Victor Street in Youngstown and later died at the hospital.

Lamarie K. Smith, 24, was indicted on two counts of murder and one count of felonious assault in connection to her death.
