Man indicted in Feb. 29 death of woman in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN — Lamarie K. Smith, 24, was indicted Thursday on two counts of murder and one count of felonious assault in the Feb. 29 death of DeeAnna Summers, 29, of Charleston W.Va.

Smith is accused of assaulting the woman at a home on Victor Avenue on the East Side. When he called police, he said he was in a fight with the woman and she was not breathing.

The woman later died at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, according to media reports. Smith waived his preliminary hearing Monday in Youngstown Municipal Court, and his case was bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury.

At that time, Smith was charged with felonious assault, but bond was set at $750,000. If Smith is convicted of murder, he could get a sentence of 15 years to life in prison.

According to a GoFundMe page, Summers was the mother of children who are 20 months and 9 years old.

Smith has no other criminal history in Youngstown Municipal Court or Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Summers’ death was the sixth homicide of the year in Youngstown.
