Eagle Joint Fire District swears in full-time chief

HUBBARD — The Eagle Joint Fire District board of trustees swore in the fire chief for a full-time position Wednesday.

Fire District Board Trustee Rick Hernandez performed the ceremony for Fire Chief Ron Stanish.

“I just want to say I’m very honored to have this position,” Stanish said. “It’s truly an honor. Thank you.”

Stanish said he has high hopes for the department as the first full-time fire chief and full-time employee at the department.

“Hopefully everything will be reported a little bit more efficiently,” he said. “It gives me an opportunity to concentrate full attention to the department which it requires.”

Mayor Ben Kyle and city employees congratulated Stanish via a letter, which was read at the meeting by Tabatha Hartzell, an employee at the Eagle Joint Fire Department.

“Hubbard City Administration and Hubbard City Police look forward to a productive partnership with you and the fire department to continue the teamwork keeping our community safe,” Kyle wrote on behalf of himself and other city employees.

In other action, two trustees battled over Facebook posts.

Tanna Angyal, an Eagle Joint Fire District board trustee, posted on the “Support the Eagle Joint Fire District” Facebook page in response to a resident calling for the Eagle Joint Fire District board of trustees to be removed.

“Who’s going to replace us?” Angyal argued. “Letters of interest for board positions were well advertised and only two township residents applied.”

She also posted on her personal Facebook stating, “Never forget that in Hubbard Township, bathrooms are more important than ambulances. Those are the people you voted for.” This post led to a series of comments between Angyal and Hubbard residents.

Jason Tedrow, a Hubbard Township trustee, expressed concern about the comments she posted to the “Support the Eagle Joint Fire District” Facebook page as well as her personal Facebook.

“I’m big on transparency and free speech (and to) afford to hold (the) members of our fire department (accountable) and then not uphold those same rules that actually apply to them, is kind of disparaging to me” he said.

He said because she posted some comments on an Eagle Joint Fire District page, she was violating policy.

“It does say we’re not allowed to use any Facebook page that has any application that could be potentially linked to the fire department or Joint Fire District,” he said. “I’m curious why the board feels that it’s held to a different standard than the employees.”

Angyal said she did nothing wrong.

“If you watch that video (of the April township meeting), Bill Coletta quotes ‘Yes, my bathrooms are more important,'” she said.

Hernandez said he was worried that Tedrow’s comments would influence Angyal to quit the fire board.

“She is probably the single most influential person on this board,” he said of Angyal. “As much of an influence as she’s had on this board, I’d hate to lose her.”

He also called Tedrow’s comments an outburst and said it shouldn’t have happened.

“That trustee (Tedrow) who said that is out of line and I have to work with him,” he said.
