Youngstown resident surrenders to face domestic violence charges

BOARDMAN — A Youngstown man appeared Thursday in Mahoning County Boardman Court after turning himself in earlier in the week when he realized warrants were issued for his arrest.

Gary Duley, 18, of South Heights Avenue, faces misdemeanor charges of domestic violence and threatening, but as of the close of business Thursday, court records did not say what his bail would be or when his next hearing will be held.

Duley was being held in Mahoning County jail as of Thursday afternoon.

The police report states that he got into an argument with his girlfriend at her Mathews Road apartment Saturday, and the woman told police it turned violent.

The report states the woman tried to walk away from him when the argument began, but he allegedly followed her into the other room and began yelling and threatening to hit her. The report states that Duley repeatedly punched the wall next to her head, threatened to hit her with a vase, then pressed his fist against her chin to intimidate her.

As the argument continued, the report states Duley punched the woman in her kneecap, then grabbed a kitchen knife and said “I should just stab you to death.” At that point, Duley’s mother arrived and tried to keep him away from the woman while he collected some personal items.

The report states he continued to antagonize and threaten the woman as he moved around the apartment, punching a hole in a bedroom wall, pouring a drink on the floor and throwing a can at her before it seemed he was leaving.

That is when the woman tried to close the apartment door behind him, and, according to the report, he pushed it open again, charged at her, hitting her in the head with a closed fist, and then pressed her against the wall with his hand around her throat.

The report states the woman told police she wanted to press charges but also wanted to ensure that Duley received psychological counseling throughout the legal process. She told police Duley was staying in Youngstown with his mother and warned them that he had a tendency to flee from law enforcement or to be confrontational with them.
