Niles man charged with theft, OVI after crash

AUSTINTOWN — A Niles man is in custody after police say he led them on a drunken chase that ended with a crash.

Mahoning County Jail online records show that Corey Heinselman, 38, is still in jail awaiting a Monday arraignment in Mahoning County Austintown Court on misdemeanor charges of OVI, leaving the scene of a crash, failure to comply, driving on a suspended license and resisting arrest.

Court records show that magistrate Don DeSanto set his bond at $1,250 in that case on Friday.

However, Canfield Court records also show a charge against him for felony theft, filed by the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday. Canfield Court Judge Molly Johnson set a $20,000 cash or surety bond in that case.

The Austintown police report states that Austintown Police Lt. William Hoelzel saw a Porsche Cayenne driving north on state Route 46 on Wednesday evening, with no headlights or taillights on, and with apparent damage to its front end.

At the same time, dispatch notified him that the same vehicle had been reported for reckless driving at the intersection of Route 46 and Mahoning Avenue.

The report states the officer tried to stop the car, watching as it weaved between the curb and the center lane, and ran a red light at Norquest Boulevard. The car did not stop for Hoelzel’s emergency lights or siren, the report states. Other officers responded and used stop sticks at Route 46 and Interstate 80, which the Porsche did run over, but it continued north toward Niles.

The report states the driver repeatedly struck the curb while yelling out the window at police and making obscene gestures.

Police ceased emergency pursuit at Clarkins Drive, but Hoelzel continued to follow at a normal speed to keep an eye out for the car and notify other police departments where it might be headed.

He lost sight of the car briefly, but just past Salt Springs Road he spotted it again — crashed with its hazard lights on in the parking lot of a convenience store, with debris from the car scattered across the road.

The report states Hoelzel saw the driver get out of the car and try to run away, but Hoelzel was able to tackle him and hold him in place until other officers arrived to assist him with the arrest.

The report states Heinselman continued to swear at police and made it difficult for them to escort him to a cruiser, that he smelled strongly of alcohol, had bloodshot and glassy eyes, and through slurred speech stated “I’m drunk as —.”

The report states police also believed he may have been under the influence of an opiate and administered Narcan before taking him to the hospital for treatment and blood testing.

The report states that before crashing, Heinselman struck several vehicles parked in a used car lot on South Main Street in Niles. Police took photographs of several open alcohol containers on the floor of the vehicle.

The report states the Porsche belonged to Heinselman’s cousin, who told police Heinselman did not have permission to take it, and filed charges against him for theft.
