Gov. DeWine to announce grant for Campbell

CAMPBELL — Gov. Mike DeWine will be at Campbell’s Community Literacy Workforce and Cultural Center today to announce a health care grant for the facility.

The money is coming from the $500 million Appalachian Community Grant Program, developed by the governor and the state Legislature to help Ohio’s 32-county Appalachian region, which includes Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

The funding comes from the Democratic-backed American Rescue Plan given to Ohio for workforce, infrastructure and health care projects.

DeWine’s office didn’t disclose Thursday how much money the Campbell project will receive. However, it is expected to be one of the higher funded projects announced today.

Campbell is the first stop today for DeWine who will be joined later by Lt. Gov. Jon Husted to make similar announcements in St. Clairsville and Zanesville.

The federal government awarded $2 million in December 2022 to the center in Campbell for an expansion to include a wellness and rehabilitation center to provide access to health care services and improve training opportunities in a medically underserved area.

This is the first announcement for funding through the Appalachian Community Grant Program and is just for health care programs.

Eastgate Regional Council of Governments and other agencies and communities in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula counties announced in December they were seeking $155.7 million from the program for 41 projects focusing on downtown and riverfront revitalization, health care and / or workforce development.

A decision on those projects hasn’t been made.
