Valley woman invited to State of the Union

WARREN — Ohio Congresswoman Joyce Beatty has invited Brittany Watts to attend U.S. President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address in March.

In the invitation letter, Beatty commended Watts for her “incredible bravery and passionate advocacy for the advancement of reproductive justice in Ohio and across our nation.”

Watts’ story was put into the national spotlight as she faced a criminal charge after suffering a miscarriage in her home. She was cleared of the charge in January after a grand jury declined to indict her.

“It was a very overwhelming experience and it was an honor,” Watts said of receiving the letter. “Receiving it in print really solidified everything. The president and vice president now know my name. In order for things to change they have to start from the top and can’t get more to the top than that.”

Watts will join Katie Cox, who was invited to next month’s address by Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.

Cox is a 31-year-old mother from Texas whose story became national news after she was initially granted an emergency request by a Texas judge to terminate a nonviable pregnancy. That ruling was then called back after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton asked the state supreme court to prevent Cox from receiving an abortion.

Although Watts says she and Cox haven’t spoken yet she said, “I’d let her know, I’m here for you and if you need anything or want to talk.”

“We’re in a spotlight now so we have to kind of lean on one another,” Watts said.

Watts said she never imagined being in this position.

“I tried to do good in my job as a medical receptionist because I love people but I never imagined it would thrust me into helping women in a plight this huge,” she said.

As she continues to be placed in the spotlight, Watts said she plans to work with advocacy groups to help determine, “what work needs to be done to orcheast change.”

The State of the Union address is scheduled for March 7.
