City man sentenced for rapes

YOUNGSTOWN — Martin Demaline, 35, of Halleck Street, was sentenced to 18 to 23 1/2 years in prison Monday after pleading guilty to two counts of rape.

Demaline was indicted on four counts of rape, one count of pandering obscenity involving a minor or impaired person, two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and two counts of gross sexual imposition.

His indictment alleged that he raped a child between late 2019 and June 2020. The child was younger than 13 at the time of some of the alleged offenses. If convicted of the rape charges, Demaline could have gotten a life prison sentence.

A resident of a home on the North Side reported early June 28 that a girl was raped the night before, according to a Youngstown police report.

Police were called to the home to talk to a relative of the alleged victim. Then police went to Demaline’s home on Halleck and found Demaline, who immediately was placed in custody and taken to the police department to be interviewed by police detectives. He has been in the Mahoning County jail since June 29, 2022.

Demaline’s cellphone was seized and placed into evidence, police said in a report. Demaline gave a statement to police, and the juvenile involved spoke to employees of the Child Advocacy Center.
