Hunters harvest 11 more deer in park

YOUNGSTOWN — Last week, 11 deer were harvested in the Mill Creek MetroParks through hunting as part of the MetroParks deer reduction program. Five were harvested the week before that.

That brings the total number of deer killed by hunters since Oct. 1 to 102. An additional 30 deer were removed by U.S. Department of Agriculture-employed sharpshooters from the Mill Creek Park Golf Course just north of Route 224 in Boardman during one night in mid-October.

Last week’s numbers came from Bryan Kay, assistant wildlife manager supervisor for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife. Nick Derico, MetroParks natural resources manager, has been providing most of the information on the number of deer killed in recent weeks. But he was unavailable to provide the data Monday. He referred The Vindicator to Kay.

A week ago, Derico said deer had been harvested by hunters from nine parks — Hitchcock Woods and Huntington Woods in Boardman, the following parks in Canfield — Vickers Nature Preserve, MetroParks Farm, Collier Preserve, Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary and Sawmill Creek Sanctuary, as well as Springfield Forest in Springfield Township and Hawkins Marsh in Smith Township.

Geoff Westerfield, another assistant wildlife manager supervisor, said Monday he is not aware of any date for any additional sharphooting to take

place.

Starting at $3.23/week.
