Charge upgraded to murder against Shanay Jacobs
YOUNGSTOWN — Shanay T. Jacobs, 32, who initially was charged with voluntary manslaughter in the Sunday death of a 30-year-old man found under a car on South Schenley Avenue, was instead charged with murder Monday.
Jacobs was arraigned on the murder charge and misdemeanor domestic violence in Youngstown Municipal Court. Jacobs appeared by video for the hearing.
The voluntary manslaughter was a first-degree felony punishable by more than 10 years in prison if convicted. The murder charge carries a penalty of up to 15 years to life if convicted.
During Monday’s hearing, Kathy Thompson, Youngstown city prosecutor, asked visiting Judge Mark Frost to set bond at $750,000.
“The reason for the bond, your Honor, is due to the nature and circumstances of this matter and the nature in which the alleged crime was committed,” she said. “The state has concerns about the safety of the community as well as the safety of others involved.”
Jacobs’ attorney, James N. Melfi, said Jacobs has been a lifelong resident of the Mahoning Valley and is “gainfully employed at First National Bank. She has some college, strong family ties, no history of any violent criminal offenses.”
She has a low-level misdemeanor disorderly conduct conviction and traffic citations, he said.
Frost said he agreed that Jacobs has a limited criminal history, “However, due to the nature of the charge here and the seriousness of the event, the risk to the community and the risk of flight in this situation” and other issues, he set bond at the mentioned amount.
Jacobs returns for a preliminary hearing at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 23.
Youngstown police said Sunday that they were called to the 200 block of South Schenley on the West Side at 5:03 a.m. for a fight and found the man under a Ford Fusion in the front yard of 209 S. Schenley. The Youngstown Fire Department and EMT Ambulance service responded, and the male was removed from underneath the car.
Jacobs was the driver of the car, police said. She was arrested Sunday and taken to the Mahoning County jail.
Jacobs had an address on South Dunlap Avenue in the city when she was charged with minor traffic offenses in April.
Lifesaving measures were performed, but the man was pronounced dead, according to a Youngstown police news release. The Youngstown police detective division, crime scene unit and Mahoning County Coroner’s Office came to the scene and investigated.
