Youngstown State trustees rename thoroughfare to honor ex-president

YOUNGSTOWN — A one-block thoroughfare on the Youngstown State University campus will be renamed in honor of a recent university president.

In recognition and appreciation of former YSU President Jim Tressel’s many contributions to the university over the years, the YSU Board of Trustees adopted a resolution during its special meeting Friday in Tod Hall to designate University Plaza between Wick Avenue and Bryson Street as One Tressel Way.

Tressel served at the top post from 2014 until his retirement in February.

In December 2006, the city of Youngstown vacated that stretch of University Plaza.

Trustee Charles T. George noted that an estimated $150.3 million in gifts had been donated to the university during Tressel’s nine years at the post. During much of that time, his wife, Ellen Tressel, served in a leadership capacity on the YSU Foundation’s Capital Campaign committee. In addition, the university ran its We See Tomorrow campaign.

Under Tressel’s tenure as president, YSU saw an increased focus on student success that resulted from improvements in retention and graduation rates. Also during that time, the university experienced increases in international student enrollment, standardized test scores of incoming freshmen and various initiatives to ensure students graduated with minimal debt, George said.

During Tressel’s presidency, YSU also underwent numerous expansions, upgrades and enhancements to its physical environment. Those included new university and private student housing, recreation and intramural fields, athletic facilities and retail development, along with a variety of technological and infrastructure enhancements, George continued.

The street being renamed in Tressel’s honor also is to recognize his overall leadership on campus and in the community, such as serving on many nonprofit boards and taking part in numerous fundraising endeavors, as well as volunteering for and supporting a wide array of charitable causes, the resolution states.

Since retiring as president earlier this year, Tressel has served as special assistant to the board of trustees for philanthropy and engagement.

The resolution lists no date for when the street renaming will take place.

Starting at $3.23/week.
