State awards $761K for road work in Valley
More than $750,000 is coming to Mahoning and Columbiana counties for transportation projects.
Gov. Mike DeWine announced the investment of $3.5 million into 10 projects from Transportation Improvement Districts, with one in each of 10 counties. The funds will cover project development and construction in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
In Mahoning County, the Mahoning Avenue Industrial Corridor Upgrade project will upgrade Mahoning Avenue and Rosemont Road including a bridge replacement and new traffic signal.
This corridor is one of the heaviest-traveled in Jackson Township. Companies in the area include Amazon, FedEx, Extrude Aluminum and Universal Stainless that have large amounts of truck traffic. The state investment is $261,386.
In Columbiana County, the County Road 430 reconstruction project will upgrade the County Road 430 corridor with widening, curb and gutter improvements, and correcting horizontal and vertical alignments.
This is a major east-west route in St. Clair Township that connects the area to the Shell cracker plant in Pennsylvania. County Road 430 is classified as a major collector and has an average daily traffic count of 5,328 vehicles. The state investment is $500,000.
“Our economy relies on the ability to move people and goods,” DeWine said. “These funds will ensure that our transportation system is keeping pace with Ohio’s growing economic needs.”
The Ohio Department of Transportation awards the funding to applications that support job creation and retention, economic development, intergovernmental cooperation, and private capital investment across Ohio.
Of the funding, $1 million will finance development of projects while the remaining $2.5 million will fund construction. The projects range from roadway extensions to turn lanes. The funding provided for each project is limited to $500,000 per fiscal year. This round of funding helps fund projects that will support 16 businesses, creating 809 jobs and retaining another 650.
