Driver hit by gunfire on Belmont hurt seriously
YOUNGSTOWN — Darian Rushton, 44, suffered serious injuries from a shooting in the 1500 block of Belmont Avenue, according to a newly released police report.
Police were called to Belmont and Norwood avenues at about 3:08 p.m. Saturday for someone in a vehicle shooting at someone in another vehicle — with the driver of one vehicle being struck by the gunfire.
The report stated Rushton was taken to the hospital before police arrived and he was in stable condition at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, which is about three blocks to the south.
When police arrived at the shooting scene, they found Rushton’s Chevrolet Malibu wrecked into a pole on the east side of Belmont Avenue in the parking lot of Lee’s Custom Upholstery, 1605 Belmont.
There were multiple bullet holes on the driver’s side; no one was in the car. Someone in the barber shop across the street said Rushton came into the business and was taken to the hospital a short distance away.
Police officers saw multiple spent rifle shell casings in the street about 10 yards from where the vehicle was found. Crime scene investigators arrived to assist with the investigation.
Police later received a bullet fragment removed from Rushton’s body and took it into evidence.
Meanwhile, a Gofundme page has been created to help with the costs of Rushton’s medical care.
The post states that Rushton was “a victim of a tragic shooting of mistaken identity. He was taken to a local hospital in Youngstown where doctors have been able to stabilize him. However, he remains in critical condition and needs to be Life Flighted to receive higher levels of care at a hospital with more resources.”
When Capt. Jason Simon, head of the detective division, was asked whether the statement about Rushton’s shooting being mistaken identity is accurate, he said he “cannot confirm that at all. The matter is under active investigation.” He did not know Rushton’s current condition, he said.
“We are asking for your help to make this happen so we can provide Darian with the medical care he needs to recover him back to his old self.”
The post adds that Rushton “is a fun-loving, happy person. He always has a smile on his face and uplifts everyone around him. Darian is a father of 6 and a veteran. He has always been a strong fighter and this will be no different for him.”
The Gofundme account had raised $6,985 of a goal of $25,000, according to the site.
