YSU posts condolences after coach’s son killed
YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University posted condolences on social media to Brad Smith and his wife, Becky, whose son Finn, 8 months, was killed in a Friday motor vehicle crash in Goshen Township.
The boy died late Saturday, according to the Canfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, which investigated the three-vehicle accident.
Brad Smith, who is YSU head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach, suffered serious injuries.
“Please keep Brad and Becky in your thoughts and prayers at this incredibly difficult time,” the post states.
The patrol stated that the crash happened just before 4 p.m. when Rebecca L. Yoder, 43, of Beloit, failed to yield at the intersection of state Route 534 and Middletown Road, and struck a 2005 GMC C5500 flatbed truck on the driver’s rear back portion. This, the patrol stated, caused the driver, John D. Burford, 68, of East Rochester, to cross the center line as he drove south on state Route 534.
Burford’s truck then struck a 2020 Mazda CX-30 head-on, causing serious injuries to Brad Smith, 38, of Salem, the patrol said. Finn Smith, who was in a rear safety seat, sustained life-threatening injuries. Yoder and Burford sustained minor injuries. The crash is under investigation.
Dustin Jones has organized a GoFundMe page on behalf of Becky Smith to raise money for the couple.
“Brad has sustained injuries that require surgery and a long road to recovery,” according to the GoFundMe page.
“Finn was a bright light who brought a smile to each and every person who met him. Becky and Brad are wonderful, loving parents and although nothing can bring Finn back, we hope this financial support can ease some of the burden,” it states.
“As Becky is self-employed, our goal is to raise funds to allow her time off from work, so she can focus on her family and begin the healing process. Brad will also need caregiving after his surgery.”
