McDonald renews contract for schools superintendent

McDONALD — The board of education voted unanimously this week to renew schools Superintendent Kevin O’Connell’s contract for five years.

O’Connell’s new contract is set to start Aug. 1, and goes through July 31, 2029. In the first year under the renewed contract, O’Connell will earn $106,918, and his contract will increase 2.5 percent every year. In the final year of his contract, O’Connell will make $118,017.

Also in the contract, O’Connell will be entitled to 15 sick days per year, 20 vacation days, five days of personal leave, and 12 paid holidays. The board also agreed to pay for O’Connell’s health insurance coverage upon the same terms and with the same benefits as provided to other licensed employees, as well as term life insurance in the amount of $100,000, and other expenses.

“It’s an honor to be considered for it,” O’Connell said at the Tuesday board meeting. “This will be my year seven, going in, so I know we’ve had a lot we’ve accomplished on this journey, but I know there’s a lot still left to do … It’s an honor to be considered to continue this journey.”

Also at the meeting, the board unanimously voted to submit the question of a levy renewal to area voters for the Nov. 7 election.

The levy, if renewed, would be 4.3 mills and would generate approximately $235,000 annually for the district for permanent improvements.

In other business, the board:

• Chose not to provide career-technical education to students in grades seven and eight for the 2023-24 school year;

• Entered into a cooperative transportation agreement with the Trumbull County Educational Service Center and Community Bus Services for the 2023-24 school year;

• Entered into a one-year agreement with Alta Care Group. O’Connell said that the group will provide behavioral services and after school programs for students;

• Approved a three-year contract with Cintas Corp. to provide the district with mats and mops, effective Aug. 1, 2023, through Aug. 1, 2026, at a total contract cost of $16,415.40;

• Approved a three-year contract with Security Voice, effective Aug. 1, 2023, to July 31, 2026, at $1,236 per year;

• Adopted a resolution to pay eight officers from the McDonald Police Department $27.50 per hour for campus patrol for all district student days for he 2023-24 school year;

• Adopted a resolution to give transportation supervisor Wilma Sylak a two-year contract renewal, effective Aug. 1, 2023 through July 31, 2025;

• Accepted the resignation of high school intervention specialist Dana Lariccia effective June 27, 2023;

• Hired Kraig Barth II as high school intervention specialist for the 2023-24 school year for $45,191;

• Accepted $15,122 in donations.
