Youngstown man gets prison term

WARREN — A Youngstown man was sent to prison after being convicted in an originally indicted five-count case involving guns and drugs.

Lekeith E. Brooks, 37, Ash Street, was not amenable for probation and was rated a high risk to reoffend. Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Sean O’Brien on Wednesday read from the defendant’s background report compiled by probation officers.

Brooks on Jan. 25, pleaded guilty to charges of having weapons while under disability, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of cocaine.

As part of the plea deal, two charges were dropped and the defendant agreed to forfeit the .40-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun and $964, which were seized during his arrest by Liberty police on Aug. 28, 2021.

Cocaine was later found on the defendant as he was booked into Trumbull County jail, reports show.

Upon his release from prison, Brooks would face a possible two years of supervision, O’Brien said. The judge said Brooks cannot carry firearms because of the drug- and violence-related convictions.

Before sentencing, Brooks told the judge he regretted the incident and he hoped to turn his life around and become a better person. His attorney, Alexander Keane, sought probation for Brooks with intensive supervision.
