Shooting death nets prison for 45-year-old

Says he went ‘too far’ in defending himself

YOUNGSTOWN — Jacques K. Peterman-Oliver, 45, was sentenced to 10 to 13 1/2 years in prison Tuesday for the Aug. 26, 2022, shooting death of Cameron Dyer, 36.

The killing occurred at a gas station at the corner of Logan and Saranac avenues on the North Side.

Peterman-Oliver pleaded guilty in December to voluntary manslaughter with a three-year gun specification and having a weapon while not allowed.

Rob Andrews, county assistant prosecutor, told Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court that the incident began with Dyer pulling up to the gas pumps and then walking toward Peterman-Oliver’s car and words being exchanged between the two men.

The incident was on surveillance video, Andrews said. Then Dyer appeared to reach into Peterman-Oliver’s car and “took something,” which led to Peterman-Oliver firing two shots at Dyer.

Andrews said Dyer appeared to be the aggressor, but after Peterman-Oliver fired two shots and Dyer lay on the ground, Peterman Oliver got out of his car and fired seven more shots, Andrews said.

Peterman-Oliver then dragged Dyer by the feet and put him in the back of Peterman-Oliver’s car and drove to the Youngstown Police Department.

“What started as self-defense ended up as much more,” Andrews said.

A young family member of Dyer spoke briefly during the hearing, saying Dyer was a “good father” who treated his kids well.

Ed Hartwig, Peterman-Oliver’s attorney, described what Dyer did as an ambush and that Dyer “reached out and robbed” Peterman-Oliver, whose actions were “clear self-defense to start.”

Hartwig said his client admits he went “too far.”

Peterman-Oliver also should not have had a gun in the car, but he dragged Dyer by the legs because that is the way he was taught in the Marine Corps, Hartwig said. He called 911 and told the police he was at the police station but believed Dyer was already dead, Hartwig said.

A woman read a letter from Peterman-Oliver’s mother, saying, “I know my son would not hurt anyone except in an extreme situation” and called him “an amazing father” who worked hard for his family.

Peterman-Oliver said he “reacted in fear” to Dyer “because I never knew it was him because he was driving a red car I never seen before.” Peterman-Oliver said four shots hit Dyer in the butt and legs, but he thought Dyer had a gun, so he fired three more and then two more when Dyer “twitched.”

Peterman-Oliver appeared for the hearing by video hookup from the Mahoning County jail.

Before Krichbaum announced the sentence, he told Peterman-Oliver: “The law does not allow you to go as far as you did, and that is what brings you here today.”

He added that this type of unfortunate violence happens in Youngstown “too often.”

Peterman-Oliver gets credit for 186 days of credit for time already served in the county jail awaiting trial and sentencing.
