Austintown schools superintendent plans to retire next summer

AUSTINTOWN — Austintown Local Schools Superintendent David Cappuzzello has informed the board of education of his intent to retire July 1, 2023.

The district’s spokeswoman, Brittany Morell, confirmed the news and said the board will vote whether to accept his resignation for retirement at its Nov. 8 meeting.

Cappuzzello replaced Stan Watson in 2019, who was then serving as interim superintendent after the retirement of Vince Colaluca, who had headed the district for 10 years. He was chosen unanimously from 17 applicants by the school board. At that time, Cappuzzello accepted a five-year contract, but Morell said he is able to retire after four years.

After graduating from Chaney High School in 1984, Cappuzzello attended the University of Akron on a baseball scholarship.

He then spent 11 years teaching in the Lakeview Local School District before serving as principal or assistant principal at Ravenna’s Southeast Middle School and in the Columbiana Exempted Village School District. He began leading the Girard district in 2011.
