District BSA recognizes works of service

CANFIELD — The Stambaugh District of the Great Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America hosted its 2022 District Recognition and Awards Dinner honoring 46 Eagle Scouts who, in 2021, earned the highest rank in Scouting.

This year’s dinner on June 26 in the Camp Stambaugh Dining Hall on Leffingwell Road also recognized several adult volunteers for their service to Scouting in various capacities. Recognitions presented for 2021 were the Scouter of the Year, Scouting Family of the Year, Cubmaster of the Year, Scoutmasters of the Year, and the highest award a district can present to an adult Scouter, the District Award of Merit.

The Stambaugh District of the Great Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America serves the Scouting families of Mahoning, Trumbull and eastern Portage counties with 70 units involving the tree major programs of the Boy Scouts of America — Cub Scouting, Scouts B.S.A. and Venturing — with more than 1000 youth and more than 600 adult volunteers.

The 46 Eagle Scout awards earned in 2021 in the district represented 46 Eagle Scout service projects that provided 7,000 hours of community service benefiting numerous locations throughout the district.

• The Boy Scouts of America Meritorious Action Award was presented to Gregory Carbon of Scouts BSA Troop 9002 of Poland for the part he played in rendering aid to an injured person due to an accident in February 2022.

• Volunteer recognitions presented were the 2021 Scouter of the Year to Beth Harnishfeger of Boardman, who serves as the district commissioner.

• The Scouting Family of the Year was presented to the Mansfield Family of the Youngstown / New Springfield area. Dennis, his wife Beth, and his brother Walter were recognized for years of service in Scouting. Dennis and Beth’s son, Dennis Jr. is an Eagle Scout and serves in the Air Force.

• The 2021 Cubmaster of the Year is Rob Zedaker of Poland Cub Scout Pack 9044.

• The 2021 Scoutmasters of the Year are Brad Lang of Mineral Ridge Scouts BSA Troop 4083 and Matt Smith of Ellsworth Scouts BSA Troop 9071.

• The District Award of Merit, the highest honor a district can present to a Scouter, was presented to two individuals, Lisa Henry of Canfield Scouts BSA Troop 8025 and Stephanie Williams of Canfield Scouts BSA Troop 8115. Both recipients not only serve their units but the district in various capacities.

This year’s dinner was chaired by Kurt Hilderbrand and assisted by the District Advancement chairmen Byron Harnishfeger, and Dr. Steve Watts Harnishfeger and Bill Moss.
