Austintown adds officers
AUSTINTOWN — In front of a crowd of about 60 people at Monday’s trustees meeting, three officers were sworn in to serve the Austintown Police Department.
Autumn Cox, 22, of Austintown; Austin Householder, 23, of Canfield; and Chad Phillips, 21, of Austintown, made it to the end of a six-month hiring process. The three still have about six months of training before they will be out on their own.
“They have a lot of responsibility on their hands,” police Chief Robert Gavalier said of his three newest officers. “They will have to make split-second decisions. We hope they make the right one. The way we do that is to train them properly.”
He said the department set out to hire five patrol officers. The department received about 25 applications, narrowed it down to five offers and three candidates accepted.
Later in the meeting, the trustees adopted an ordinance relating to the dates and times people can set off fireworks in the township. Under an Ohio law that will take effect Friday, localities may allow their residents to set off fireworks on select dates. The following are the dates and times people can set off fireworks in Austintown after Friday:
• July 3, 4 and 5, and the weekends immediately before and after from 4 to 11 p.m.;
• Labor Day weekend from 4 to 10 p.m.;
• Diwali from 4 to 10 p.m.;
• New Year’s Eve from 4 to 11:59 p.m.;
• New Year’s Day from 12 to 1 a.m. and from 4 to 11 p.m.;
• Chinese New Year from 4 to 10 p.m.;
• Cinco de Mayo from 4 to 10 p.m.;
l Memorial Day weekend from 4 to 10 p.m.;
• Juneteenth from 4 to 10 p.m.
Austintown’s noise ordinance prohibits excessive noise after 10 p.m. weekdays and 11 p.m. weekends, which is why the trustees chose 10 p.m. as the cutoff for fireworks for most holidays.
During the meeting, trustees also declared about 25 properties a public nuisance and authorized $620,000 to be spent on the annual road resurfacing project.
