Youngstown man gets 46-month prison term

YOUNGSTOWN — A Youngstown man was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison on a conviction of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Jawonn Hymes, 32, of Cherry Hill Avenue, appeared Tuesday before U.S. Judge J. Philip Calabrese of the Northern Ohio District Court, who also ordered Hymes undergo three years of supervision after his release from prison.

Hymes pleaded guilty to the charge on Nov. 10, 2021, court records show. The case stems from a traffic stop in Austintown, after Hymes’ vehicle ran a stop sign at Oakwood Avenue and North Meridian Road. Reports state Hymes struggled with police and was subdued by a stun weapon. Police officers in searching the vehicle found cash, some marijuana and a firearm, according to the report.

As part of the plea deal, Hymes agreed to forfeit a FN Herstal semiautomatic pistol.

The indictment states Hymes was prohibited from carrying firearms because of a cocaine possession conviction in 2014 in Mahoning County and a 2018 felonious assault conviction, also in Mahoning County. The assault case was connected to the November 2015 murder of Thomas Owens, 33, who was shot and killed in a parked car on West Myrtle Avenue, reports state.

In a sentencing memorandum, defense attorney Jeffrey P. Saffold of Cleveland said the assault conviction had a “remarkable impact” on Hymes. He was genuinely “in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Saffold wrote.

After his prison term, the memo went on to state that Hymes started a business and focused on starting a family. Hymes’ daughter had a series of health problems and had faced multiple surgeries, the lawyer wrote. Saffold concluded that Hymes accepted responsibility for his latest offense.

As part of the sentence, Calabrese ordered Hymes get credit for the time already served in jail while awaiting the completion of the case. Reports show Hymes was arrested Feb. 25, 2021.
