Closed Girard business subject of 18 complaints

Owner’s death limits legal options

GIRARD — A former Girard construction business is the subject of 18 complaints made to the Ohio Attorney General’s consumer complaint website in a seven-month period of 2021.

Consumers who have filed complaints against the company, however, may have trouble getting their money back because the company’s owner has died.

Complaints are pending against Elysium Construction and Consulting LLC, at 1110 Trumbull Ave., Girard. Eight of the complaints, which started in May 2021, dealt with poor service or shoddy workmanship, while others talked about the company’s failure to deliver a product or service. The final complaint was listed as submitted on Dec. 17 with a note that the company went out of business.

According to a Better Business Bureau website, Elysium was listed as no longer in business.

A call made to the phone number given for the company on the BBB website was found to no longer be in service.

The review found on the BBB website for Elysium showed a rating of one out of five from a survey of 10 customer reviews.

The Better Business Bureau website received four consumer complaints about Elysium in the last three years. According to the website, the owner of the business was Scott Stoner, formerly of Struthers, who died Dec. 19, 2021, of complications from COVID-19. Stoner had started the business in June 2020, the BBB website stated.

Because Elysium is an limited liability company with a single-owner who has died, court officials in the area said consumers may be out of luck in trying to get refunds for the poor service. Those consumers may want to get a lawyer to see if the owner left any money, but any legal action must be taken within six months of the owner’s death.
