City man charged with felonious assault

Accused of burning mother with hot food

YOUNGSTOWN — John J. Reid, 33, of Selma Avenue, is in the Mahoning County jail, charged with felonious assault of his mother, accused of burning her hands and legs with boiling food he took from the stove and threw at her.

Police were called to his mother’s home on Glenwood Avenue at 4:17 p.m. Wednesday for a domestic incident.

The woman said she was cooking food for her family when she and Reid got into an argument over food. She said the argument started to escalate, so she went into another room to put some distance between him and her.

When she walked back into the kitchen, Reid again began to argue with her. She continued to do what she was doing near the sink. When she turned around, Reid was holding a pan of collard greens, which were simmering on the stove, she said.

He threw them on her, then picked up a large pot of corn, which was boiling, and threw that at her, she said. Then he fled from the home.

While an officer was interviewing the woman, she observed burns on the woman’s legs.

“Several spots of skin were completely removed,” an officer stated in a police report. Photos were taken of the injuries.

The officer wrote out the woman’s statement because she was unable to use her hands to write. She was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment.

The felonious assault charge was filed, and the U.S. Marshal’s Service arrested Reid on a warrant related to the injuries to his mother. Reid was taken to the Mahoning County jail. Reid’s criminal case in Youngstown Municipal Court does not list a court date.
