Youngstown Torch Club to host match presentation Wednesday
YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Torch Club will sponsor a presentation on the human toll of the English match industry at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the James Gallery in Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University.
Wednesday’s program will feature Dr. Lowell Satre, whose presentation, “A Dangerous Trade: Phosphorus Match-making in England,” will examine how the industry’s expansion in the 19th century had a profound negative effect on women and children.
Dr. Satre, professor emeritus of history at YSU, is author of “Chocolate on Trial: Slavery, Politics and the Ethics of Business” (Ohio University Press, 2005)
and “Thomas Burt, Miners’ M. P., 1837-1922: The Great Conciliator” (Leicester University
Press, 1999).
The Youngstown Torch Club, which was chartered in January 1927, is an organization of professional people who gather once a month to listen to a paper presentation. For further information,
