Austintown homicide hearing pushed back

AUSTINTOWN — Steve W. Green III, 24, charged with aggravated murder in the Oct. 8 shooting death of his ex-girlfriend, Ashley Lockhart, outside of a Compass West apartment, is rescheduled for a preliminary hearing at 11 a.m. Nov. 3.

The hearing had been scheduled for Wednesday morning, but Judge Scott Hunter pushed the date back sometime Wednesday. Court records indicate the judge ordered that Green be appointed an attorney, but court records do not indicate who will represent him.

Green remains in the Mahoning County jail in lieu of $1 million bond.

A defendant and his or her attorney frequently waive his or her right to have a preliminary hearing, but when he or she does not, prosecutors present evidence to try to establish probable cause that the crime was committed and that the defendant committed it.

A preliminary hearing frequently involves the defendant’s case being bound over to the common pleas court for a grand jury to consider indictments.

Austintown police have said Green, of Youngstown, killed Lockhart, 25, also of Youngstown, while she was on the phone talking to an Austintown police dispatcher.

Lockhart had gone to the apartment to have a girls night with Katelyn Lofaro, Lofaro said. The apartment complex is where Lofaro lived.
