Two are arraigned in city murder cases

YOUNGSTOWN — Erik E. Jenkins, 25, of Columbus, was arraigned Tuesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court in connection with the March 4 murder of Thomas C. Williams, 34, and the wounding of a security guard.

The shooting took place in the parking lot of King’s Court tavern, 3223 South Ave. Magistrate Dominic DeLaurentis of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court kept Jenkins’ $1 million bond in place after Jenkins pleaded not guilty by video from the Mahoning County jail.

Jenkins was indicted on murder, attempted murder and felonious assault in a case that took a surprising turn when authorities revealed that Jenkins is charged in Williams’ death, but it may not have been his gunshots that killed Williams.

During a news conference, officials revealed it’s possible a security guard with whom Jenkins exchanged gunfire may have fired the shots that killed Williams.

Jenkins is charged with the murder because he began the gunfight, causing the security guard to return fire, authorities said.

Capt. Rod Foley, chief of detectives, said the security guard “appears to have been the target of Mr. Jenkins, who initiated this whole shooting by walking up in the parking lot and just shooting (about a dozen shots) at the security guard.”

The security guard was the victim of the attempted murder and felonious assault, according to the indictment.

Law Director Jeff Limbian commented that under Ohio law, “When you come to a gunfight and start a gunfight, you’re responsible for everything that happens from that point on. So regardless of whoever ultimately shot” Williams, Jenkins is charged with killing him.

In a second murder case, Jillian L. Russell, 37, formerly of Youngstown, was arraigned Tuesday on aggravated murder and murder, charged with killing Marcus D. Turnage at Russell’s Lakewood Avenue home last April.

Last month, Judge Renee DiSalvo of Youngstown Municipal Court ruled that Russell had been restored to competency and could now be tried on the charge.

DeLaurentis continued Russell’s bond at $1 million after she pleaded not guilty by video from the Mahoning County jail.

Another person arraigned Monday was Adrienne D. Washington Jr., 19, on charges of involuntary manslaughter, failure to comply with the order of a police officer, aggravated vehicular homicide and vehicular manslaughter in the traffic crash death of Darius Shackleford, 24.

Police say Washington was fleeing from police Feb. 6 on Albert Street on the East Side when he drove through a red light, hitting Shackleford’s car in the intersection of Albert Street and McGuffey Road, killing Shackleford, a former Youngstown State University football player.

Washington is free on $40,000 bond. He pleaded not guilty Tuesday, and DeLaurentis continued his bond.
