Rotary Club awards seniors scholarships
YOUNGSTOWN — The Rotary Club of Youngstown recognized 10 seniors from each of Youngstown’s city and parochial high schools at its annual Scholastic Achievement Awards March 31 at the MVR in Youngstown. Each senior received a $500 scholarship to Youngstown State University for the fall 2021 semester.
One student received the Edward J. Hulme scholarship given by the Hulme family in honor of Rotary Club of Youngstown past president Ed Hulme, who had over 50 years as a club member. Also honored were the two top juniors from each school who will receive a dictionary/thesaurus. And, in keeping with tradition, the club recognized the annual WFMJ-TV Spelling Bee champion, Christopher Dominick, a seventh-grader from Struthers.
The scholarships have been awarded annually since 1989. However, their origins began as a Rotary Student Loan fund that was created in 1946 to assist students attending Youngstown College, later Youngstown University, and then Youngstown State University.
Seniors receiving scholarships were: Leanne Chandler, Cardinal Mooney; Terrance Childress-Harris, Rayen Early College; Hermione Gomez, Youngstown East; Steven Hiner, Cardinal Mooney; Cara McNally, Ursuline; Jamie Nelson, Ursuline; De’Janae Oliver, Rayen Early College; Colleen Rowland, Ursuline (Edward J.Hulme Scholarship); Emily Smith, Ursuline; and John Erik Vargo, Cardinal Mooney.
