Jury finds Burger King robber guilty

YOUNGSTOWN — A Mahoning County jury returned guilty verdicts against a 23-year-old man accused of robbing a Campbell fast food restaurant in 2018, a place where he had worked as a manager.

Israel Graham, 23, of Kenneth Street, Youngstown, was convicted on charges of aggravated robbery, safecracking and three counts of kidnapping. He was one of two men charged with robbing the Burger King on McCartney Road of $2,000 shortly before closing on Oct. 28, 2018.

Jurors deliberated for more than six hours over two days,

Common Pleas Judge Maureen Sweeney did not set a sentencing date. Prosecutors say Graham could be sentenced up to 50 years in prison. Sweeney revoked the bond for Graham, who was led away in handcuffs by sheriff deputies.

“It’s a shame; he is such a young man,” defense attorney Ed Hartwig said after the verdict was read. “He potentially faces severe consequences.”

Hartwig, however, complimented the jurors for being attentive and taking their time in reaching the verdict.

Graham, who did not testify, left the restaurant’s employment two weeks prior to the robbery. Three employees, a former girlfriend and two police officers testified during the first day of the trial on Wednesday.

Both suspects were wearing masks and sunglasses, but the three employees who testified said they recognized the voice because Graham used to be a co-worker.

The defense did not call any witnesses on Thursday, and the jury began deliberations after closing arguments and the judge’s instructions for deliberations.

Information about the status of the second man’s case was not immediately available Friday.

It is the first jury trial at the courthouse since November because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
