1/3 of Ohioans have received vaccine
More than 3.5 million Ohioans have started getting the COVID-19 vaccination with more than 2 million completing the inoculation process.
The Ohio Department of Health reported 3,571,137 people, or 30.55 percent of the state’s population, had at least started getting the vaccine as of 6 a.m. Friday, including 95,071 people in the previous 24 hours.
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is given in one dose while Moderna and Pfizer require two doses.
In Mahoning County, 32.74 percent of the population (74,867 people) had received at least one dose with 30.66 percent in Trumbull County (60,706 people) and 26.97 percent in Columbiana County (27,480 people) as of 6 a.m. Friday, according to the ODH.
There were 2,075,856 people, 17.76 percent of the state’s population, who finished the vaccinations as of 6 a.m. Friday, including 69,521 in the prior 24 hours.
In Mahoning County, 20.43 percent of the population, 46,711 people, had completed the process while 19.04 percent of the population in Trumbull, 37,697 people, and 17.78 percent of the population in Columbiana, 18,114, had as of 6 a.m. Friday.
COVID-19 DATA
The 1,677 COVID-19 cases reported Friday is slightly up from the daily average of 1,666 for the past 21 days.
It was the fourth-straight day with COVID-19 cases higher than the 21-day average, but the least amount during that time.
Also, eight of the past 11 days have reported cases higher than the 21-day average.
Three variants of the virus are on the rise, particularly in the northern part of the state, including the Mahoning Valley, said Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, ODH’s medical director.
The state had a total of 1,021,718 COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 969,471 presumed recovered and 18,643 deaths, according to the ODH.
The ODH provides death information only on Tuesday and Friday.
There was an increase of 34 COVID-19 deaths since Tuesday, including one each in Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
Mahoning County had 20,317 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 19,149 presumed recovered and 576 deaths, according to the ODH.
Trumbull County had 15,097 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 14,102 presumed recovered and 453 deaths.
Columbiana County had 8,378 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 8,027 presumed recovered and 222 deaths.
