CAMPBELL — Fire crews were called out Sunday afternoon to a fire at the Jehovah’s House of Prayer Church of God in Christ, 229 Reed Ave., where flames and smoke could be seen coming from the back and attic areas of the building.

Fire Capt. Steve Dubic said they received a call at 12:40 p.m. about a fully involved fire at the church on the corner of Reed Avenue and 14th Street.

“When we arrived, there were people who had been in the church outside. You could see flames and smoke coming from the church,” Dubic said.

Officials estimate about 15 people were inside the church for Sunday worship, but everyone was able to get outside.

Several people were on the nearby sidewalks watching fire crews battle the blaze as heavy grayish-white smoke was coming from the building.

Dubic said the cause of the fire is still being investigated, and it caused extensive damage to the back and upper levels, including the roof of the one-and-a-half story church.

“The church had a lot of damage,” he said.

Cause of the fire may have been an electrical issue.

Damage estimates are being determined, but the church is a total loss with smoke damage.

Dubic said the fire is believed to have started at the back of the church and then spread to the attic and upper level.

Crews from Campbell, Struthers, Poland and Coitsville were called to the scene to battle the blaze.

Ohio Edison also was called to the scene to deal with fallen power lines.

The church is located in a residential neighborhood.
