Cases inch closer to 1M
DeWine to visit Youngstown
Ohio is inching closer to 1 million coronavirus cases — and likely will break that threshold today — as the Ohio Department of Health reported 931 new cases Sunday, bringing the statewide total to 999,750.
Gov. Mike DeWine will visit a Youngstown COVID-19 vaccination site at 9:30 a.m. today with Youngstown Mayor Jamael Tito Brown. The pair will visit the Eugenia Atkinson Recreation Center, 903 Otis St., which is on the North Side.
On Friday, Brown will host a memorial ceremony in remembrance of loved ones who have died from COVID-19, as well as for those who are “still battling the effects of the pandemic.” The event will be at 6:30 p.m. at Huntington Community Alley at Wean Park, near the Covelli Centre in downtown Youngstown.
Zero deaths were reported Sunday, keeping the total steady at 18,340. However, the ODH is only updating death totals on Tuesdays and Fridays, so the new total will be released Tuesday.
There were 30 hospitalizations reported Sunday, with two of them being ICU admissions.
Mahoning County is reporting a total of 19,914 cases, 943 hospitalizations and 573 deaths.
There have been 14,748 cases in Trumbull County with 1,073 hospitalizations and 446 deaths.
Columbiana County has 8,288 cases, 469 hospitalizations and 217 deaths.
More than 2.7 million Ohioans have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination, according to the Ohio Department of Health, representing 23.34 percent of the state’s residents.
This week residents age 40 and older are eligible to schedule appointments to have the vaccine. DeWine announced Friday the state was lowering eligibility age to 40.
The state is getting about 400,000 vaccine doses per week, which will go up to about 500,000 starting March 29. That’s also the date everyone at least 16 years of age in Ohio will become eligible to get the vaccine.
The state reported that cases per 100,000 Ohioans dropped to 143.8. DeWine previously said the state will rescind its pandemic-related health orders at 50 cases per 100,000.
