Report: Student had note stapled to head
No charges filed; aide disciplined
BOARDMAN — No charges were filed after Boardman police looked into a claim that a note was stapled to a boy’s hair while at school.
Sgt. Mike Sweeney said an investigation revealed no criminal offense was committed. The investigators also worked with prosecutors during the investigative process.
Police said a woman reported on Jan. 19 that her son “was extremely shook up about an incident” that took place with the teacher’s aide in his Boardman Center Intermediate School class.
The boy was identified in a police report as being on the autism spectrum. His daily routine includes getting a bottle of water from a teacher in the school.
The boy’s teacher and the aide “had requested several times that” the child bring his own water bottle to school, the report states.
A note was stapled to the boy’s hair and he allegedly was struck with the stapler on the back of the neck, which caused a visible red mark with scabbing, the report added.
It was explained, however, that the boy gets a bottle from another teacher — and that he doesn’t forget to bring one from home.
Portions of the report, including names, were redacted by police. A caller who alerted The Vindicator to the matter said the boy is 10. An attempt to reach a direct family member on Thursday, however, was not successful.
School administration told law enforcement that disciplinary action was taken against the aide.
The school district, contacted by the newspaper on Thursday, did not specify what action was taken.
In a statement, the district noted when incidents are reported, they are thoroughly checked out: “Boardman Local Schools takes very seriously the safety and welfare of all students. Although privacy laws prohibit commenting on specific incidents, all allegiations of staff misconduct are thoroughly investigated in accordance with the district’s disciplinary process.”
