COVID cases in state set 1-day record
Mask mandate begins today in Youngstown
Ohio saw an increase of 1,110 new COVID-19 cases and 42 new deaths Sunday, bringing total cases to 74,932 and deaths to 3,174 since the pandemic began.
The Ohio Department of Health also reported hospitalizations rose by 42, bringing that total to 9,555.
On Friday and Saturday, the state reported the highest single-day increases in cases since the viral outbreak began. On Friday, 1,679 new cases were reported — the most since the state started releasing numbers. On Saturday, the state reported 1,542 cases, the second highest number of new cases.
According to the latest map of warning levels, Athens, Delaware, Licking and Union counties in central Ohio are now at level 3 (red), which is high risk. Nineteen counties now are under that alert level.
With the new counties added, 60 percent of Ohio’s population will now be living under a mask mandate, according to state health officials.
Trumbull County had been at level 3, but last week was moved to level 2, joining Mahoning and Columbiana counties, which have remained at level 2. Trumbull County was removed from level 3 after it saw a decline in the number of cases per 100,000 residents.
Trumbull County recorded 19 new cases for a total of 1,173 with 250 hospitalizations and 85 deaths, according to the Trumbull County Combined Health District.
Mahoning County has 2,089 cases, an increase of 16, with 388 hospitalizations and 241 deaths. Columbiana County added seven cases for a total of 1,458 with 163 hospitalizations and 62 deaths.
Gov. Mike DeWine last week strongly urged people to wear a mask in public, a move he said is essential to help stop the spread of the novel coronavirus. He did not issue a statewide mask mandate, but indicated restrictions statewide could be on the way this week if the surge continues.
Although Trumbull County has been removed from the level 3 list, Warren city council members Cheryl Saffold, D-6th Ward, and Ron White, D-7th Ward, have introduced legislation that requires face coverings in any public space in the city. Youngstown announced similar measures and masks will be required everywhere in the city beginning today.
