Police find apparent homicide victim

Man found in parked vehicle

YOUNGSTOWN — A man, 35, was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds at 720 Parkview Ave. off of Glenwood Avenue in the Idora neighborhood.

Police said they were sent to the Youngstown South Side location at 10:03 p.m. Sunday after the department’s gunshot-detection technology picked up multiple gunshots being fired.

Officers found the male dead inside a parked vehicle in front of the home. Identification of the victim is being handled by the Mahoning County Coroner’s office, according to a news release from the Youngstown Police Department’s detective division.

People working and walking near the home Monday afternoon said they believed the house had been vacant for a while. One man said the cars parked beside the house had also been there for a while.

The department said it is investigating but had no suspects as of Monday. No official ruling on the cause of death has been made, but detectives referred to the case as a “homicide investigation.”

Detectives referred reporters to the coroner’s office for release of the victim’s name, but the office did not return calls seeking information. Later Monday, the detective bureau said the coroner’s office was still trying to notify the victim’s family.

The home is next to the former Park Inn, which was at one time a popular entertainment venue. In the past few decades, many homes in the area have been demolished or renovated, and murals have been installed on the former Park Inn and other nearby buildings.

Ian Beniston, Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. executive director, said crime has diminished significantly in the neighborhood in recent years after the L.S.P. street gang was driven out.

L.S.P. stands for Laclede Avenue, Sherwood Avenue, Parkview and or Princeton, federal officials said when they unsealed a 42-count federal indictment in 2011 charging 23 members and associates of L.S.P. with murder, robbery, witness intimidation, retaliation and drug trafficking.

In Warren, meanwhile, police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred at about 1:37 a.m. Monday near 599 Lane Drive, at the Hampshire House apartments.

Police went to investigate after a caller said two to three shots were fired.

The Trumbull County Coroner’s office was called to the scene a short time later, when a body was found outside of a vehicle.

Timothy Allen Jr., 34, 1584 Ferdale Ave. SW, was identified as the person found on Martin Street, which is nearby.

Coroner’s office officials said an autopsy is expected to be done today.
